Bucharest
Located in the heart of Europe, Hungary is the country that covers most of the Pannonian Plain. The Kingdom of Hungary, established at the beginning of the 11th century, was one of the major powers of medieval Europe, competing with the Byzantine Empire in territorial expansion. Hungary’s independence from the Ottoman Empire was consolidated in the 16th century, and later, in the 20th century, the country was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from which it separated in 1918. Today, Hungary has been a member of the European Union since May 2004.
One of the country's most important tourist attractions is Hortobágy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the vast Pannonian Plain. The capital city, Budapest, lies along the majestic Danube River and attracts visitors with iconic landmarks such as the Parliament Building, the Citadel and Gellért Hill, the Royal Palace, Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church, the Budapest Opera House, Margaret Island, and many more. Budapest impresses not only with its vibrant cultural and nightlife scenes but also with its spa tourism, being the European capital with the highest number of thermal baths.
Other notable attractions include the Reök Palace in Szeged, the Castle of Eger, the Cathedral in Esztergom, the Sümeg Fortress, the ruins in Szombathely, the Szarvas Mill, the Lóczy Cave in Balatonfüred, and the Thermal Bath in Berekfürdő. Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe, is a paradise for water lovers, offering numerous recreational and water sports facilities, making it one of Hungary’s most interesting tourist destinations.
Annual events and festivals add even more charm to Hungary. Some of the most renowned include the Titanic International Film Festival, the Budapest Island Festival (Sziget Festival), the Wine Festival at Buda Castle, Septemberfest, the Budapest Christmas Market, and the Concert of the 100 Gypsy Musicians in Budapest.
