Bucharest
The smallest Nordic country in terms of population, Iceland is an island nation consisting of the main island of Iceland and several smaller peripheral islets, located in the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and Greenland. Despite its size, Iceland has had a tumultuous history, being desired by many nations: initially colonized by Celts, Scandinavians, Irish, and Scots, it was under the sovereignty of Norway and later Denmark, from which it declared independence in 1944. One remarkable fact about Iceland is that it is home to the world’s oldest parliament, Althing, established in 930. In 2008, after the country went bankrupt, citizens removed the political leadership and elected 25 non-partisan citizens to draft a new Constitution.
Surrounded by the ocean, Iceland primarily exports fish and fish products, which also form the basis of its cuisine. Tourism is another vital component of the Icelandic economy, with most visitors coming from the United Kingdom and Germany. Tourists are drawn to the breathtaking landscapes, including glaciers, geysers, geothermal springs, and over 130 active volcanic cones. Among the top tourist destinations are the Blue Lagoon (one of the most famous SPA centers in the world), the Great Geysir and Strokkur geysers, Gullfoss Waterfall, Thingvellir National Park, and Skaftafell National Park.
Iceland also offers unique experiences, such as guided glacier tours, themed parties, and special festivals. Notable events include the White Nights Festival (in July), when the sun does not set, and the Arctic Nights Festival (in February), when the sun does not rise. This highly organized tourism system attracts annually a number of visitors twice as large as the island’s resident population.
Iceland has two international airports, served by airlines such as Air Berlin, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Icelandair, Wizz air, Ryanair and easyJet.
