Transporting Alcoholic Beverages and Alcohol on Board the Aircraft

There are general rules followed by most airlines, as well as specific regulations in each country. Therefore, it is recommended to check the requirements for transporting alcohol in the country you plan to visit. If the country you are traveling to has stricter regulations than the general rules, you will need to comply with those specific regulations.

Transporting Alcoholic Beverages in Hand Luggage

Currently, strict limits apply to the transport of liquids in the airplane cabin. Most airlines allow liquids on board in containers of a maximum of 100 ml each, with a total volume of up to 1 liter. Therefore, only miniature bottles of alcohol and flasks up to 100 ml are allowed in hand luggage. An exception is made for beverages purchased in Duty Free, which must be packed in a specific, often sealed, safety bag.

Alcohol Purchased in Duty Free

If the passenger is traveling on a direct flight and the destination country’s regulations permit the transport of alcohol, they may purchase alcoholic beverages in Duty Free stores and bring them on board. It is important to remember that alcohol purchased from Duty Free stores should not be unpacked until reaching the destination. If the flight includes a layover, the transport of alcohol depends on the regulations of the country where the layover occurs.

Transporting Alcohol in Checked Luggage

Since only a small amount of alcohol can be transported in hand luggage, most passengers prefer to transport alcohol in their checked luggage. Most airlines impose the following rules for transporting alcohol in checked luggage:

There are no restrictions on the amount of beverages with an alcohol content below 24%.

For strong alcoholic beverages (24-70% alcohol), the transport limit is up to 5 liters per passenger.

Transporting alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content above 70% is prohibited.

Alcohol must be packaged in commercial retail containers, and the bottle must be properly labeled.
