Flights from Baia Mare to all countries

Baia Mare, the capital of Maramureș County, is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Gutâi Mountains. Its name, "Baia" (meaning "mine"), reflects its rich history as a mining center. The extraction of gold, silver, and other non-ferrous metals in the area dates back more than 2,000 years. The city is home to several historical and cultural gems worth exploring.

Baia Mare was first mentioned in 1329 in a Hungarian chronicle under the name Rivulus Dominarum ("The Ladies' River"). Legend has it that the name originates from the local women who charmed the invading Hungarian soldiers, persuading them not to attack the fortress.

The city's historic heart is Liberty Square (Piața Libertății), which has recently been restored to its original beauty. On the eastern side of the square stands Elisabeta House, a building dating back to 1440, constructed for Elisabeta, the wife of Iancu de Hunedoara, and the only remaining part of her castle. Iancu de Hunedoara also built the imposing Stephen's Tower, standing 40 meters tall on 1 Mai Street, as well as the nearby St. Stephen's Cathedral.
