Chișinău, also known as the “city of white stone” due to its abundance of buildings constructed from white limestone, is the capital of the Republic of Moldova. Located in the Central Moldovan Plateau and crossed by the Bâc River, Chișinău is a city rich in history and culture. The first documentary mention of the city dates back to July 17, 1436. In 1673, Chișinău was described as a market town, and later, Dimitrie Cantemir referred to it as a small and insignificant city. In 1712, it was officially proclaimed a city but suffered severe destruction in 1788 when it was set on fire by the Turks, marking the most devastating event in its history.
Chișinău's growth began with the establishment of Russian regiments in 1806. In 1812, following the Treaty of Bucharest, the eastern part of Moldova between the Prut and Dniester rivers was annexed to the Russian Empire, and Chișinău became the capital of the new region. Today, the city is the economic, scientific, and cultural center of Moldova.
Situated on seven hills in a picturesque landscape, Chișinău is a modern capital that blends traditional elements with contemporary architecture, giving it a unique charm. Among the city's main tourist attractions are:
