Frankfurt am Main, also known as “Frankfurt, the city on the Main River,” is one of the largest cities in the state of Hesse and the fifth-largest city in Germany. While commonly referred to as Frankfurt, the city's official name is Frankfurt am Main.
Located on the Main River, the city has an estimated population of approximately 670,000 residents. It is important not to confuse it with Frankfurt an der Oder, a different city located on the Oder River in eastern Germany, with a population of around 70,000 people.
Frankfurt am Main is a major financial and economic hub, home to the headquarters of the European Central Bank. The city's territory also includes Germany’s largest airport – Frankfurt International Airport, which serves over 52 million passengers annually.
The city is one of contrasts, where luxury and modernity coexist with a modest lifestyle. Skyscrapers and modern buildings stand alongside well-preserved historical houses. If you visit Frankfurt, there are several must-see attractions, including: the Iron Bridge, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the Staufenmauer Ruins, Hauptfriedhof Cemetery, the Zoo – one of the most beautiful zoos in Europe, Grüneburg Park, the Tropical Garden and Botanical Garden, Thurn und Taxis Palace (built between 1731 and 1739), the History Museum, the Giersch Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Städel Art Institute, the Goethe House and Museum, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum, the Jewish Museum, the German Film Museum, and many more. It is impossible to be bored in such a vibrant city!
Frankfurt also hosts numerous annual events, including the Church Choir Concerts, the Festival of Lights and Roses, the Opera Square Festival, the Main River Festival, the Cultural Festival “Museumsuferfest,” and the “Autumn Dippemess” Festival.
